Rafanomezantsoa Manana Hasina Yvon - Defender of coral reefs

Student Researcher, Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences

Rafanomezantsoa Manana Hasina Yvon is a research student at the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) in Toliara, where he focuses on the study and conservation of coral reefs. His passion for marine biodiversity and his commitment to the protection of coral reefs have led him to work on reef health monitoring and restoration projects in the southwest coast of Madagascar. For the past three years, Yvon has played a key role in implementing projects aimed at involving the local population in the conservation of marine biodiversity. His efforts are particularly focused on the restoration of coral reefs, an essential task in the face of the increasing degradation of these vital ecosystems.
In 2023, after several years of failures in coral cultivation using plastic collars, Yvon managed to develop an alternative method
using sisal fiber ropes. This approach, both economical and ecological, marks a significant advance in coral restoration projects, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.
