The ten heroes of marine ecosystem protection
Ten Ocean Defenders, who have been given the name Akio Foty, literally meaning "white shark", have been selected throughout Madagascar for their commitment to the fight against poaching, habitat destruction and overexploitation of marine resources, thanks to the initiative of the Natiora Defenders NGO. This NGO actively works to protect the environment by supporting conservation heroes and documenting their inspiring journeys, through their Ocean Defenders project which is supported by the MIHARI Network and the Belobe NGO.
Natiora Defenders raises funds to strengthen its initiatives and organizes forums to increase the impact of these defenders. Precisely, these young heroes and heroines of the marine ecosystem were invited to participate in a panel discussion entitled Raising Voices of Ocean Defenders, as part of the fifth Locally Managed Marine Areas or LMMA forum which was organized by the MIHARI Network in Majunga since September 23, to give them an opportunity to make their voices heard on the protection of marine ecosystems.
The event, sponsored by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Dr. Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, and the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Max Andonirina Fontaine, allowed these Ocean Defenders to share their experiences, the daily challenges they face, such as death threats and the destruction of their property. They were also able to discuss their urgent needs, including patrol boats, devices to document crimes against the marine ecosystem, as well as health and life insurance, which are essential for their safety. The ten Ocean Defenders were awarded a certificate to recognize and honor their exceptional courage at the closing of the forum which ended yesterday.
