“Standing for the ocean is a tough job, especially for women. But I am convinced that if you give us decision power, we will change the world.”

Those were the words of our great ocean defender in the Diana region, Marie Clarisse, who has been dedicated to protecting local mangroves for over 5 years.

She is particularly devoted to mangroves and their restoration. Being a member of the mangroves Control and Supervisory Committee (CCS) and affiliated to the Ankivonjy AMP (Protected Marine Areas), she stands out in her field as she mostly works with men.

“I have seen the ancient beauty of our mangrove and today I am a witness to its degradation. Now I am doing whatever I can to bring that beauty back and it’s really satisfying to see that the efforts you are putting into something finally pay off. If I could, I would dedicate my whole life protecting mangroves because what they do for humanity is just incredible.”

Marie Clarisse proudly talks about the power of mangroves. Among their many roles, she mentions particularly the protection of coastal homes from ocean waves, air purification and, above all, the great heritage they offer future generations.

And now the interesting part, how does she contribute to protecting the local mangrove? She described her work as a patroller and the dangers of being one, especially of you are a woman.

"We plan two patrols a week. Sometimes we catch the poachers, sometimes we don't. When we do, we bring them to the KMD." (Committee responsible for the Application of Dina).

As a woman, it’s a quite dangerous job because we do not scare the lawbreakers, my own husband is even against the fact that I still do this job.

Another risk you take when you decide to become a patroller is that, at any time during the day, you'll have to take action if someone warns you that they've caught a criminal act in the mangrove. At that point, you have to give up anything that you're doing and go and see what's going on. Most of the time I am doing housework when it happens, and it does not always please my family.”

Despite these aspects of the job, Marie Clarisse assures that she will never give up on her job and will continue protecting the ocean as long as she can. She declares that mangrove forests protect everything and everyone in the seaside and they need to be preserved at all cost.

When she was asked to give message to the world, our ocean heroine proudly addressed this one: “Standing for the ocean is a tough job, especially for women.

“I think everyone knows what I want to tell them, which is to stop harming our ocean. They think that marine resources are infinite, but that is certainly not the case, at least not anymore. Nothing but man is causing the current environmental problems and if we continue to damage our natural resources, we will leave nothing for future generations. As you already know, I am particularly fond of mangroves. Why would people continue to destroy them? Mangroves are the walls that protect our homes from tropical storms, they give us food, fresh air and they are beautiful! Of course, they can be exploited, but not recklessly. So my message to the wrongdoers is to think of their children and grandchildren. No one wants their descendants to starve to death.”

“It’s not enough to protect, we have to rebuild. I know that protecting is hard work, but when you do something, you have to do it perfectly and do it to the end. If we just defend our oceans by stopping the bad guys, we’re only going to slow down the extinction of our resources. That’s why we have to rebuild, including by reforesting as much as possible. Again, it seems hard, but once you really see the benefits of your efforts, there’s no stopping you.”

“Defending the ocean is hard work, especially for women. But I believe that if you give us the power to decide, we will change the world. People don’t fear men in particular, they fear everyone who holds power. And everyone, regardless of gender, has the right to access power. I always do my best to inspire women in my community and I can proudly say that there are many of them who are currently defending the ocean. My message to all courageous women is quite simple: become a woman that everyone is forced to respect.”

When Marie Clarisse was asked about the reason why she is so dedicated to the mangroves protection, she said:

His first message is specifically addressed to those who are destroying the marine ecosystem:

The second message from our ocean heroine was proudly addressed to ocean defenders:

Marie Clarisse's last message was dedicated to all women who work in a "man's job":
