Mandimbihasina Angelo Ramy - Database Manager and Community Patrols
Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
Since his university studies in 1999, Mandimbihasina Angelo Ramy has dedicated himself to researching Madagascar’s biodiversity, with a deep conviction that the island’s lemurs deserve special attention for their conservation and their potential as a resource for sustainable development through ecotourism. Currently, he mobilizes local communities to conduct patrols aimed at identifying and reducing pressures on lemur habitats. He also engages them in fighting fires that threaten these habitats. Thanks to his work, approximately 540 representatives of local communities have been trained in the use of technology to report violations. His actions focus on several protected sites, including Baly Bay National Park, the Ambondrobe Lake and Forest Protected Landscape, the Alaotra Lake Protected Landscape, and the Menabe Antimena Protected Landscape. The team closely monitors alerts regarding fires and deforestation in these areas. Mandimbihasina has also contributed to publications on biodiversity conservation in Madagascar, including lemurs. His articles include: – Andrianarimisa A., Andrianambinina F.O.D., Mandimbihasina A.R. (2022). SMART: Technology-based Law Enforcement Monitoring in Madagascar’s Protected Areas.
