Karine Lalaina Mahefarisoa

Member of the Board of Directors of Natiora Defenders

Since obtaining her doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar, Karine has acquired more than ten years of experience in the fields of wildlife health and conservation.

Currently a doctoral student at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, her research falls within the framework of the “One Health” concept, with a particular interest in zoonotic diseases in wildlife, as well as in environmental management and governance in Madagascar.

Alongside her academic work, she volunteers with a non-governmental organization, where she conducts awareness campaigns among local communities, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

With a master’s degree in public health and another in Environmental Science and Management, Karine is dedicated to promoting integrated health for humans, animals, and the environment. She is committed to strengthening her environmental advocacy by ensuring that the voices of local communities are heard by decision-makers.

Karine is convinced that the future of the environment in Madagascar depends on the sustainable management of natural resources, the restoration of ecosystems, and increased awareness of the island’s unique biodiversity. Strengthened governance, closely involving local communities, is essential to reconciling socio-economic development and conservation. Through international and national collaborations, Madagascar could become a model of sustainable conservation while simultaneously improving local living conditions.
