Forest Defenders
The Guardians of MADAGASCAR'S Forests
Madagascar’s forests are home to exceptional biodiversity that is unique in the world. They provide a refuge for thousands of endemic species, including the famous lemurs, chameleons, rare birds, and medicinal plants.
However, this natural heritage is currently under serious threat from deforestation, bushfires, illegal exploitation, and human pressure.

Why are Madagascar's forests essential?
Preserving Madagascar’s “green lungs.” Forests play a fundamental role in Madagascar’s ecological balance: they regulate the climate and store carbon, protect the soil against erosion, preserve water resources, provide a habitat for over 80% of the island’s endemic species, and support local communities through natural resources.
The disappearance of these forests represents an irreversible loss for the entire planet.
At Natiora Defenders, the Forest Defenders program highlights the individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting Madagascar’s forest ecosystems. Our mission is to tell their stories, showcase their efforts, and raise public awareness about the importance of preserving these vital areas.
