Fifth Forum on Locally Managed Marine Areas: Ten Ocean Advocates Make Their Voices Heard

Ten ocean defenders, named Akio Foty (literally meaning “white shark”), were selected from across Madagascar for their commitment to combating poaching, habitat destruction, and the overexploitation of marine resources, thanks to an initiative by the NGO Natiora Defenders. This NGO actively works to protect the environment by supporting conservation heroes and documenting their inspiring journeys through its Ocean Defenders project, which is supported by the MIHARI Network and the NGO Belobe.

Natiora Defenders raises funds to strengthen its initiatives and organizes forums to amplify the impact of these defenders. These young heroes of the marine ecosystem were invited to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Raising Voices of Ocean Defenders,” as part of the fifth Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA) forum, organized by the MIHARI Network in Majunga since September 23rd. The event provided them with an opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the protection of marine ecosystems.

This event, sponsored by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Dr. Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, and the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Max Andonirina Fontaine, allowed these ocean defenders to share their experiences and the daily challenges they face, such as death threats and the destruction of their property. They also discussed their urgent needs, including patrol boats, equipment to document crimes against the marine ecosystem, and health and life insurance, essential for their safety. The ten ocean defenders were awarded a certificate to recognize and honor their exceptional courage at the closing of the forum which ended yesterday.
