Karine Mahefarisoa

From the forest to the laboratory, Karine Mahefarisoa’s journey has been built on a deep conviction:

protecting wildlife and supporting local communities are one and the same. A veterinary doctor specializing in wildlife in her early career, she worked extensively with animals. In the field, she also witnessed the gradual disappearance of their habitats and the challenges faced by the communities who live alongside them.

This experience made her realize that conservation cannot be conceived without those who share these territories.
Driven by this conviction, she returned to her studies twice while pursuing her professional career. After earning two master’s degrees, she began a doctorate at KU Leuven, a major undertaking that she started as she was preparing to become a mother for the first time. This challenge strengthened her resolve and gave even more meaning to her commitment.

Currently a PhD, researcher, and lecturer in environmental governance at KU Leuven, Karine’s work focuses on the links between science, public policy, and field action. She is particularly interested in bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and decisions that influence biodiversity conservation and the well-being of local communities.

A co-founder of Natiora Defenders and a member of its Board of Directors, Karine helps amplify the voices of conservation actors in Madagascar. Through the organization, she works to highlight those who protect the country’s terrestrial and marine biodiversity while strengthening the engagement of local communities. Her career reflects her unwavering commitment to building bridges between research, conservation, and action.
